September 15th-October 15th is recognized as Hispanic Heritage month. But what does it even mean to be Hispanic? Is it a language, a place of origin, a race, a way of life, or something else? From the confusing census forms to the word itself there are many grey areas that might leave this diverse set of people feeling an identity crisis – let’s dive into the nuances of how each of us defines Hispanic culture and explore the areas we’re proud of.

LOCATION
This month we’re headed to a Mexican-owned and operated business in Phoenix called Tres Leches Cafe that serves some classics like horchata, aguas frescas, and other Mexican-inspired beverages. They even have pan dulce (sweet bread) to go with your cafecito (little coffee)!
Tres Leches Cafe has 2 locations and we are meeting at the location on the north side of Van Buren st just west of 17th ave. A small parking lot is located behind the building to the north. The other location is a small drive-through so please don’t get confused!

ABOUT COFFEE TALKS
Every other month join us for Coffee Talks – order a warm/iced beverage of your choice from rotating café locations around the valley, get comfortable, and bring your open mind to this productive discussion where NOMAarizona facilitators will ask the group questions and hold space to share, listen, and learn from each other in a casual setting.
This is intended to be a forum for discussion of ideas and for learning about differing viewpoints. In discussions around diversity and equity it is important to understand that everyone sees and experiences the world differently – what seems “right” in your experience may not be so in someone else’s. Everyone is asked to consider different perspectives, for the purpose of sensitivity, learning, and growth. Members of NOMAarizona will typically be the facilitators for our discussions. We are not experts. We are simply here to help facilitate the process. We are here, like everyone else, to learn.
