Dear NOMAarizona Family,
It is an incredible honor to serve as president of our chapter for the next two years. The mission, values, and vision that founded this chapter have been a refuge for many of us in this profession and a strong support for minorities to grow, lead, and thrive. Continuing that legacy is not a responsibility I take lightly.
I came to Arizona as an immigrant 20 years ago. It was a new country, with completely different construction and measuring systems, and a language I had only learned in classrooms. I had to relearn many things very fast. But the learning was not only technical or about new words. There were cultural shifts and everyday norms that were entirely new to me. And although this community welcomed me in many ways, there were still times when I faced situations where people were not happy with what I represented to them. That feeling of being an outsider stayed with me for a long time, even after I made my life here.
NOMA changed that for me. I was embraced like family. I began to see that what made me different was also what made me valuable. The mentorship and encouragement I received from this incredible community opened my eyes to what’s possible. And it reminded me how vital it is to show up for one another, to share our stories, our lessons, and our support.
Looking ahead, and with your belief in our mission, our amazing executive board, committee chairs, and dedicated volunteers, we aim to:
- Grow and expand our efforts to create a strong pipeline for students entering the fields of architecture, design, and construction
- Build impactful mentorship pathways for professionals already in the industry, supporting their growth, especially into leadership roles
- Continue to show up in our communities as advocates for those whose voices often go unheard, offering socially responsible and just design solutions
- Strengthen our presence within the design and construction industry as powerful contributors to a stronger, more inclusive and resilient profession
Understanding who we are, and what we can do for one another, is where real change begins. Within our chapter, this family, we hold a wealth of knowledge, experience, and resilience. When we are there for each other, we don’t just uplift our own paths, we lead change in our society through the power of design.
Sometimes that change starts with small, consistent acts that create lasting ripples. Other times, it means taking bold, collective steps to confront the bigger challenges. Either way, I know we’re ready. Together.
Muchas gracias, familia,
Fatima Garcia
