SUMMARY:Coffee Talk #10 - 3 Years Since George Floyd
DESCRIPTION:This Month’s Topic: 3 Years post-George Floyd— What has changed? What hasn’t? How are we doing?\n\nFree event – no membership needed\nRSVP\n\n—————– \nPiexoto is located at the Epicenter at Agritoptia in Gilbert. On-site parking is available. \n—————– \nEvery other month join us for Coffee Talks – order a warm/iced beverage of your choice from rotating café locations around the valley\, get comfortable\, and bring your open mind to this productive discussion where NOMAarizona facilitators will ask the group questions and hold space to share\, listen\, and learn from each other in a casual setting. \nThis is intended to be a forum for discussion of ideas and for learning about differing viewpoints. SUMMARY:Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza Tour
DESCRIPTION:Free event\nOpen to public\nPPE required (closed-toed shoes\, safety glasses\, safety vest) so please RSVP to secure your spot!\nRSVP and save in your calendar!\n\nJoin our next tour of the newly opened and still under construction Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza led by Brett Elsasser\, Willmeng Project Manager\, and Brandon Sobiech\, DIG Studio Associate Principal. \nDig Studio in close collaboration with Ritoch Powell and Lake|Flato Architects developed guiding principles with the City for the renovation that were based on previous plan outreach. With a bond-funded $27.5 million budget\, the Civic Center Plaza Renovation Project will upgrade the utility infrastructure\, grading and drainage\, and the landscape as well as provide a new decorative hardscape. Improvements will include new structural elements\, such as two multi-functional stages\, restroom facilities\, a children’s play area with a mist-fog system\, and a play area with a shade canopy. \nParking: If using Google or Apple maps – please use the following address which directs you to the parking lot next to the Willmeng trailer where we will meet: \n7469 E Indian School Rd\nScottsdale\, AZ 85251 \nSince we won’t be there all day\, attendees can park for free in any of the highlighted areas on the map below. \nIf you would like to host a tour in the future\, please contact Pratima Tatikonda at pratimatatikonda@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Coffee Talk # 8 - Rest & Invest
DESCRIPTION:This Month’s Topic: Rest & Invest – Learning to say no\, avoid burnout\, and invest in your wellbeing.\n\nRSVP so we know you’re coming!\nFree event but please consider purchasing something from the café to support local minority owned business\n\nInspired by NOMA National’s Immediate Past President\, Jason Pugh\, and his Quarterly President’s Challenge to support the EMPOWER pillar of the NOMA Presidential Platform\, we wanted to pause and take the time to address the idea that tirelessly championing for JEDI initiatives across the building and design industry is both physically and mentally taxing\, especially when its hard to see true measurable progress along the way. DEI fatigue is real for both the limited few minorities across the industry and our white colleagues\, partners\, and supporters who all champion for our cause. It is critically important we all take time in our busy professional lives to find a healthy work/life balance\, and also invest in both our physical and mental health in order to ensure we’re all able to continue fighting the good fight. \nThe challenge is to take time to create a healthy mindset and invest in your overall well-being. Let’s not only be mindful of our own mental health and daily stress points\, but also of other NOMA members\, leaders\, and DEI champions as well\, and step in aggressively with encouragement and support when we see others in need. \nThe intention is to not only expand the reach\, awareness\, and impact of minority architects\, but also equip them with the mental and physical tools to counteract the inevitable mental and physical fatigue that comes with tirelessly fighting for change in the building and design industry. \n“Small individual lifts can have a large collective impact.” ~ Jason Pugh \n———————— \nEvery other month join us for Coffee Talks – order a warm/iced beverage of your choice from rotating café locations around the valley\, get comfortable\, and bring your open mind to this productive discussion where NOMAarizona facilitators will ask the group questions and hold space to share\, listen\, and learn from each other in a casual setting. \nThis is intended to be a forum for discussion of ideas and for learning about differing viewpoints. In discussions around diversity and equity it is important to understand that everyone sees and experiences the world differently – what seems “right” in your experience may not be so in someone else’s. Everyone is asked to consider different perspectives\, for the purpose of sensitivity\, learning\, and growth. Members of NOMAarizona will typically be the facilitators for our discussions. We are not experts. We are simply here to help facilitate the process. We are here\, like everyone else\, to learn. \nIf you have a topic you’d like to chat about or a location to suggest – please submit to Jena Esquivel

SUMMARY:Community Day of Service
DESCRIPTION:Community Day of Service: Mutual Aid PHX community fridge clean up/refill \nEach year our chapter participates in giving back to the local community. This year\, our chapter voted to focus on contributions to grassroots mutual aid efforts in the Central Phoenix Community. Now through December 17th we invite you and everyone you know to collect non-perishable foods/goods and monetary donations for perishables to be purchased on our day of service on December 17th. Our goal is to come together on Saturday December 17th where we will divide all who come into two groups. The items we’ve collected will be divided among the groups and we will set off to tidy up and refill the two local fridges located in the Encanto and Garfield neighborhoods. Should folks want to drop-off goods before December 17th\, Richard Kennedy is more than happy to collect and store in their office until December 17th. \n\nWhat: Mutual Aid PHX community fridge clean up/refill\nWhere: Richard Kennedy Architects is the collection site for our efforts. The two community fridges are located in the Phoenix Encanto and Garfield neighborhoods.\nWhen: Drop off donations now through December 17th at Richard Kennedy Architects. The day of actual service will be December 17th at 10am.\n\n\nAbout Mutual Aid PHX \n\nWe are an all-volunteer grassroots group operating in Phoenix\, AZ.\nWe are prioritizing folks who are sick\, disabled\, quarantined without pay\, elderly\, undocumented\, queer\, Black\, Indigenous\, and/or people of color — including those displaced from Phoenix to the nearby areas.\nWe know that there are enough material resources for everybody in the community. We facilitate the redistribution of resources and create connections to various resources and community-led organizations.\n\nWhat is mutual aid? (from the Mutual Aid PHX website) \n\nMutual aid is solidarity\, not charity. we believe that\, together\, we can build a more survivable system\, where we take the responsibility of caring for one another\, rather than relying on the state or its enforced individualism.\nMutual aid is voluntary exchange\, with the goal of redistributing resources within and between communities.\nWe know there is enough for everyone.\nWe keep each other safe.\n\n

SUMMARY:Home Cooking Away From Home
DESCRIPTION:FREE event\nComplimentary dinner\, dessert\, and drinks\nNon-members\, students\, and future members welcome\nRSVP please so we know how much food to order\n\nFour years ago in the early years of our chapter we realized that the holiday season was missing a crucial element for some of our members that hail from other places — a family gathering. For those unable to be with their friends and family\, we decided to start a potluck-style casual gathering that we dubbed “home cooking away from home” consisting of our membership to fellowship with culturally familiar food and drink as a taste of home. \nThe event has evolved over the years and through COVID-19 to suit different needs – but we are thrilled to gather in person again this year at Steele Indian School Park under the ramada embracing the nice weather. Rather than potluck style – the main course will be catered HOWEVER we are asking our members to please bring a small dessert representative of their culture to share with the group if they would like. \nFriends are welcome! Please bring anyone you would like but be sure to RSVP so we know how much food to prepare. \n\nLocation details\nWe have reserved ramadas W1 and W2 near Lot A at the north west side near Bird Lake at Steele Indian School Park. \n \n \n
